Why Are Letterpress Wedding Invitations So Expensive?

If you've been browsing wedding stationery and fallen in love with the look and feel of letterpress, you’ve probably also noticed the price. So why is it so expensive?

Here’s a quick insight into what goes into the cost:

1. Custom Printing Plates

Letterpress requires custom printing plates to be made for each design and colour. These plates are unique to your invitation and cannot be reused.

2. Time-Intensive Process

Each sheet is hand-fed into a vintage press, one at a time.

In my case, this is a 1880’s Eagle Empress Platen Press. It's a slow, manual process that takes real skill and attention to detail.

3. Premium Paper

Letterpress works best on thick, 100% cotton paper that can hold the deep impression. This paper is luxurious and more costly than standard cardstock.

4. Skilled Craftsmanship

You're paying for more than just printing. You're investing in the work of an artisan who knows how to operate and maintain traditional printing presses.

5. Low Volume, High Quality

Unlike digital printing, letterpress isn’t made for mass production. The focus is on quality over quantity, which adds to the price per piece.

So, Is It Worth It?

If you're looking for invitations that are timeless, elegant, and truly memorable, letterpress is a worthwhile investment.

Its deep, tactile impression creates a level of craftsmanship that digital printing simply can't match - turning your stationery into a keepsake your guests will not forget.
